Chandrashekhar Thukral, MD, PhD
Chandrashekhar Thukral, M.D., PhD, a board certified Gastroenterologist, joined Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd in 2007. Dr. Thukral completed his medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago followed by a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston. He takes care of patients with a wide variety of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He has a special interest in providing comprehensive care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease).
Dr. Thukral is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and is involved in teaching medical students and residents. He has served as a faculty mentor for the James Scholar Program for medical students. He has been a past member of the Executive Committee, Admissions Committee and the Student Promotions Committee at the medical school.
He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology. He is a fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and has previously served on the Budget and International Committees. He is a founding member of the ASGE Recognized Industry Associate (ARIA) taskforce that is responsible for designing and teaching training programs for industry representatives. He has served as a faculty member and course director for ASGE’s teaching courses including the ARIA course and first year fellow’s course.
While maintaining a busy clinical practice, he has pursued his research interests in collaboration with his colleagues and mentors at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and at Harvard Medical School. Some of his research has focused on quality parameters in the care of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Celiac disease. He has published in several peer reviewed journals and has presented his research at national meetings.
Outside of patient care, Dr. Thukral enjoys reading, exploring new places and cuisines and playing golf. Besides English, he is fluent in Hindi, Italian and Bengali.
Dr. Thukral is an active member of the medical staff at UW Health Swedish American Hospital and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
